The first section will illustrate how migrants are governed by humanitarian measures, and how these latter are entangled with processes of securitization of migration. It will explore the recent transformation of the European asylum politics, drawing attention to humanitarian-security mechanisms and to the centrality of border cooperation with African countries in the European migration agenda. The second section will focus on how technologies are used for purposes of surveillance and control, with a specific focus on forced migration. The module will look at how digital technologies function to identify migrants and to govern them at a distance in the Mediterranean Sea as well as along land borders.

Assessment typically involves sitting an examination or submitting coursework or a combination of the two. Coursework is assessed in a variety of ways, including essays, case studies, presentations, tests and mooting. A total of twelve law modules and six politics modules are studied over the course of three years. These modules include the core law modules needed for Qualifying Law Degree status. Focusing on specific thinkers and themes, it engages with the political thought of significant intellectuals and political leaders , and examines different forms of anti-colonial politics, including nationalism, socialism and ‘third-worldism’. In terms of material to be studied, while academic literature is important, students will be encouraged to listen to and think critically about songs, albums and videos as texts which either implicitly or explicitly engage or challenge the political.

The Grado de Bachiller is equivalent to an ordinary degree, so grades of 15+/20 are required. Students who have completed a Maestria from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study. Students who hold the Licenciado/Professional Titulo from a recognised Mexican university with a promedio of at least 8 will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

Direct Entry Students

This would be in accordance with the relevant local conversion requirements and any further study required in the non-Scottish destination jurisdiction. Please note however that this is only possible following a joint degree programme if you have been able to complete all additional courses required for the Diploma. All Year 1 students have access to Edinburgh’s Law Peer-Assisted Learning Scheme . The Mooting Society also provides you with opportunities to learn and practise courtroom skills. In Years 3 and 4, courses are studied at ‘Honours’ level, where you will choose from up to 40 specialist courses covering a range of theoretical, practical and historical fields of study.

Your degree will provide excellent preparation for your future career, but this can also be enhanced by a range of employability support services offered by the University and the College of Arts and Law. You will spread your module work over the two teaching terms, ideally studying three modules in each term. However, this depends on your module choices and it is also possible to study two in one term and four in another. In addition to the weekly seminars, you will have to allow adequate study time for each of your modules. Each module represents a total of 200 hours of study time, including preparatory reading, homework and assignment preparation, and attending seminars. Modules run for one term, and each module involves a two-hour weekly seminar which you are required to attend.
