The MA offers a unique combination of academic research-based modules and more practical, hands-on experience. NTU and Exeter are working in partnership to deliver six split-site Biomedical PhD studentships. If successful, you will benefit from expert supervision from researchers in both institutions and have the opportunity to research and live in two great locations, for up to eighteen months in each. Jane is an interdisciplinary practitioner, and began her career in textile design. She has since worked as National Craft Advisor for the Women’s Institute in the charity sector, and has 20 years’ experience of teaching in higher education across a range of creative programmes. The purpose of this module is to enable you to develop professional attributes and subject skills through experience in the work place, and to critically reflect upon your learning in that context. You will normally be expected to arrange your own placement, with support from academic staff and BCU Careers. This can be achieved in one block, or can be dispersed over a longer period of time, if required. Through working on a series of projects and briefs written in consultation with external agencies and institutions, you will build up a portfolio to showcase your individual abilities. You will develop key transferable skills in creative thinking, problem solving, collaboration, leadership and strategy, project management, budgeting, marketing, communication, presentation, independent research, critical and analytical thinking skills.

A three term MA programme, structured around four taught modules , including a work placement, in addition to a final dissertation or curatorial project . Art Writing has been one of my favourite modules as we were introduced to a range of experts who specialised in all styles of writing. Overall the MA has been an excellent opportunity to network within the art world and expand upon my own personal interests.

You will also be able to establish whether your product is viable – whether you can make it at a price that is attractive to customers, and which will be financially worthwhile for you. If you find that an aspect of what you are doing is too expensive or too time-consuming, consider your processes and the design of your workflow and supply chain. When you work out the prices for your work, you need to take into account your time and the cost of any materials, as well as the profit you need to make to cover your general business overheads. You will also need to make sure your taxes and more general requirements such as marketing, finance and business planning are in order.

Design Thinking & Innovation in Collaboration with the Design Museum

Samsung have led and moulded this relationship with the British Museum and it has worked across their new product, through business reputation and into employee benefit. They stated that it was a brilliant, fascinating and pioneering partnership way beyond the usual steps of product concept and brand building. Impressed by the way in which technology had been used to transform the viewer experience, the judges said that this partnership went above and beyond the criteria for the category. Combining the expertise and resources of both partners, the collaboration illustrated how using digital can enhance an exhibition by making it more inclusive. This programme will prepare you for graduate level employment by developing a number of the skills and attributes that are valued by employers. Drawing on expertise from the university’s Art History and Visual Culture team and across the world, lectures and seminars are framed around conversations with internationally recognised curators, artists, researchers and writers.

Birmingham School of Art, an impressive purpose-built Grade 1 listed example of Venetian Gothic architecture, was the first major renovation project undertaken by the university (£5.5m refurbishment). In previous years School of Art international trips have included visiting the Venice Biennale, New York, Berlin and Barcelona. The purpose of this module is to introduce key concepts and debates around global commercial art markets, from various perspectives and with all stakeholders in mind. This includes the type of loans, grants and scholarships available both from the government and from Birmingham City University.
